Flu patients who took antipyretic drugs stayed sick an average of 3.5 days longer than patients who did not take fever medication, according to Karen I. Plaisance, Pharm. D., of the University of Maryland, College Park, and her associates.

In their retrospective analysis, 13 of 54 patients were given either aspirin or acetaminophen to reduce fevers of 38.9[degrees]C early in the course of experimentally induced disease (Pharmacotherapy 20[12]: 1417-22, 2000).
