High Caffeine Intake Raises Miscarriage Risk.

Daily ingestion of at least 500 mg of caffeine, which is equivalent to about three 8-ounce cups of coffee, can almost double a nonsmoker's risk of miscarriage in the first trimester, Swedish investigators reported.

A case group of 562 women who had miscarried at 6-12 weeks of gestation had a significantly higher caffeine intake than a control group of 953 women who had not miscarried, said Dr. Sven Cnattingius of the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, and his associates (N. Engl. J. Med. 343[25]:1839-45, 2000).

The investigators adjusted the data for factors such as age, number of previous pregnancies, and history of spontaneous abortion. The adjusted odds ratio for risk of miscarriage in nonsmoking women who consumed 500 mg or more of caffeine per day was 1.4, ...
