Oct. 19--More than 63,000 Chicago children will be tutored at 343 city schools this fall--a dramatic improvement after last year's dismal start to federally mandated after-school instruction in failing schools.
While the program will reach only about a third of the 201,000 children eligible for free tutoring under the No Child Left Behind Act, it's still a far cry from last year, when just 9,000 pupils were being tutored by midyear.
This year, school officials say the number of low-income kids getting after-school help was limited only by the amount of federal money available for the program--$45 million.
