Jun. 13--Thomas Cameron's hands still have calluses even though his fingers are misshapen from rheumatoid arthritis.
He got the calluses climbing steel beams to weld iron, shifting gears on heavy equipment and pounding nails with a hammer. He worked hard. He paid his taxes.
A few years ago, Cameron was living the American dream. He owned a trucking company, a nice home and a fish camp on the Wolf River.
His illness changed all that.
"I stayed pretty healthy," he said. "Now I can hardly walk."
Cameron closed the trucking business, rented his home to cover the mortgage payments and moved into the 800-square-foot fish camp. His wife, Trish, lost her job of 23 years because of the work days she missed caring for him. They learned to live on a $694-a-month Social Security check.
