Some people think that South Africa, which is celebrating a decade of democracy this month, is evidence that miracles still happen.
After all, the deeply divided country of 45 million people has made a mostly peaceful transition from white rule and the evil of apartheid's officially sanctioned racism to a free nation with a constitution that protects everyone and with a Truth and Reconciliation Commission that found a way to offer forgiveness and a path to the future.
There still are many troubles, but South Africa stands as a symbol of hope in a world rubbed raw by anger and hate.
