How safe are amusement parks? It is hard to say since there is no federal regulation or official reporting system.
Nationally, a few people die and others are injured each year. Accidents, carelessness by riders or underlying health problems of visitors are often the cause. Yet sometimes, rides themselves have defects.
Unlike some states with lax or no regulations, Michigan and Ohio do regulate amusement rides and water parks.
Critics call for more federal regulation, citing accidents such as one this month in which an improperly restrained man was killed on a Superman roller coaster at Six Flags New England.
