TAMPA, Fla. _ For all these years, Dave Lowry's nickname, Pie, should have been spelled Pi.
The original Panther got his nickname as a kid. He was considered a math wizard.
As the Calgary Flames' grand old man, however, the veteran left wing doesn't need an algebraic formula to compute his beating the odds.
Last season he lost his captaincy and was ultimately shipped to the minors in his 18th NHL season. He spent all of this season with the Flames, but he sustained a serious abdominal injury in January and began the playoffs as an assistant coach.
But at 39, with almost 1,200 games under his belt, Lowry _ the player _ finds himself with a chance to win a Stanley Cup. The Flames and Tampa Bay Lightning are tied at two wins with Game 5 on Thursday.
"It makes it all rewarding," Lowry said. "You always have to believe in yourself, because if you don't believe in yourself, how can you expect anybody else to?"
