Byline: Bob Foltman
OAKLAND, Calif. _ With Magglio Ordonez out of the lineup, Willie Harris got a rare opportunity Tuesday night. White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen had little choice but to play the left-handed swinging Harris against Oakland left-hander Mark Redmond.
Harris, who played center field with Aaron Rowand in right, was 1-for-17 against lefties entering Tuesday night's game. Harris, however, isn't ready to concede he can't hit left-handers.
"You have to get in there and play awhile before you can say that," he said. "I don't think I struggle against lefties. I'm 1-for-17 against them _ that's a sign of struggling _ but I just want to put the ball in play."
The way Harris has been hitting lately _ .391 over his last five games and .384 for May _ it might not matter if the pitcher throws left-handed, right-handed or underhanded.
"It's just about getting at-bats and getting a chance to play, find your groove and ride it out because you're going to struggle at some point," he said.
