ELMONT, N.Y. _ In 1976, John Servis had dropped out of college and was learning the horse racing business while doing menial tasks for esteemed New York trainer Scotty Schulhofer.
"I was very fortunate," Servis said. "Scotty's barn was right across from Billy Turner's."
Turner had a precocious but problematic 2-year-old in his barn that year.
"He was a high-strung and high-spirited horse," Servis said. "Every day Billy would take him out and spend an hour or so with him. Every week you could see that horse was relaxing more and more.
"He could easily have been a head case. Billy made that horse what he was."
That horse was Seattle Slew, and he went on to win the 1977 Triple Crown.
