Vitamin E in the form of alpha-tocopherol was shown to protect against bladder cancer in a study of 1,000 residents in Houston, Texas. Results were presented at a meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research last spring.
People who ate a diet rich in vitamin E foods sources include almonds, spinach, mustard greens, peppers, sunflower seeds and a variety of oils including olive, cottonseed and canola--had half as much bladder cancer as those who didn't.
As BN reported earlier, a study of 30,000 Finnish smokers showed that those who took alpha-tocopherol supplements lowered their risk of prostate cancer by 33 percent.
A National Cancer Institute study is currently testing the effects of 400 milligrams (mg) of vitamin E and 200 micrograms (mcg) of selenium daily on more than 32,000 men over 7 years to see if the combined substances reduce prostate cancer, the Associated Press reported recently.
