May 16--COLLECTING IS A SIGN OF AN EMERGING INTEREST IN FINANCES: When I was a kid growing up in the 1960s, I was crazy about baseball cards.
Every week, after my parents handed over my allowance, I would scurry to the drugstore and buy four or five packs for a nickel apiece.
I always had my eye on acquiring more. I would trade for cards and I would flip cards with my friends into a hat with the winner taking all. Then I'd spend hours sorting, organizing and finally wrapping rubber bands around my cardboard collection.
They were my prized possessions, my hard assets, perhaps even my ticket to future fortunes …
