JACK MORRIS NEVER WILL FORGET all those times he upset Dave Winfield. Morris would throw the ball. And Winfield would throw his bat.
"He had a terrible habit of throwing his bat at me," Morris said. "I threw him changeups, and that really screwed him up. He must have thrown a bat at me at least half a dozen times, maybe even 10 times."
Morris, who pitched for the Detroit Tigers, Twins and Toronto Blue Jays, kept his earned run average from escalating by realizing early there were certain pitches you didn't serve up to Winfield.
"Dave covered the whole plate," Morris said. "He was one of those great hitters you had to be aware of and pitch around when the game was on the line. He was great."
Now he's with the greatest of all time. Winfield, along with former Twins teammate Kirby Puckett, has been voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
That didn't surprise Morris, who also was on the ballot. Morris received 101 was on the 515 votes cast, fat short of the 387 required for selection to the Hall of Fame. Winfield received 435 of 515 votes.
Anyway, Morris was pitching for the Tigers when he faced Winfield, who was then with the New York Yankees. They later were teammates on the Blue Jays' team that won the 1992 World Series.
