LOUISVILLE, Ky. _ A horse raised at Philadelphia Park got the perfect ride on Saturday at the Kentucky Derby, so now Smarty Jones is America's latest Seabiscuit.
"It's unbelievable!" screamed Roy Chapman, the owner of a chain of car dealerships who lives in New Hope with his wife, Patricia, Smarty Jones' co-owner.
They were the toast of Churchill Downs after jockey Stewart Elliott, who rides claimers at Philadelphia Park, rode their horse to win the Derby by a length.
As Smarty Jones neared the finish line, trainer John Servis, who works at the Bensalem track, said: "I'm thinking, if my knees were not buckling, I probably would have jumped out of the box."
The official track handicapper had made Smarty Jones the second choice behind The Cliff's Edge, but bettors disagreed, making him the 4-1 favorite.
