MIAMI _ Kayaker Marie Mijalis and her teammates overcame boat problems and rainy weather Saturday to win their K-4 race and qualify for the Athens Olympics.
The U.S. led from start to finish in the 500-meter event and beat Mexico by two boat lengths in Curitiba, Brazil.
"We told each other before the start that we wouldn't look around during the race," said Mijalis, 23, of Coconut Grove, who paddles from the fourth seat in the back, known as the engine.
Mijalis and teammates Carrie Johnson, Kathy Colin and Lauren Spalding, who won the U.S. Olympic trials, had to win the continental qualifier Saturday to earn four slots for the U.S. at the Summer Games.
