TEL AVIV, Israel _ California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger brought movie-star charisma, political panache and a body builder's bravura to embattled Israel on Saturday, and for a time the familiar tensions of this troubled place seemed to melt away.
He charmed business leaders with practiced jokes.
"Last week I lifted 285 pounds. I lifted Teddy Kennedy off his chair," he teased about his wife's uncle, the Massachusetts senator.
He inspired them with a message of economic cooperation, announcing five new or expanded business partnerships that will create hundreds of jobs in Israel and California at a time when Israel is experiencing record-high unemployment. In one deal, SANRAD, which develops storage area networks, will move its world headquarters to Alameda, Calif., bringing a projected 300 jobs.
