CLEVELAND _ Talking baseball. Sinkers and splits. Sliders and the slide step. Taking on 3-and-0 or raking on 3-and-0. It all rolls trippingly off the tongue, an endless stream of jargon that is taken for granted by those who play the game.
So the Indians held this meeting before they played the White Sox last Tuesday in Chicago. These days, teams have almost as many meetings as Albert Belle had corked bats.
This one was nothing special, but it was different. Manager Eric Wedge and pitching coach Carl Willis wanted to make sure that everybody was on the same page.
I'm not talking about the Tribe's rebuilding plan. In this case, the common phrases and expressions that comprise the term "talking baseball" were the subject of the meeting.
