FONTANA, Calif. _ Kyle Petty harshly criticized fans who littered the track with debris after the Aaron's 499 last week at Talladega Superspeedway ended under a yellow flag.
"The fans obviously had their heads up their rear ends about throwing stuff on the track" he said Saturday. "Those weren't fans. They didn't come to see a race.
"They were disappointed that they didn't see what they thought they should have seen. But I've been to the movies and I didn't throw popcorn at the screen when the movie didn't end like I wanted."
Petty said cars were still running 70 to 80mph behind the pace car at the time.
"If you blow a tire at that speed you're going to hit something hard," he said.
Petty said NASCAR followed its rules in finishing the race as it did and in declaring Jeff Gordon the winner because he was leading at the time the caution came out.
