CHARLOTTE, N.C. _ The telephone rang frequently, but the one call Rod Rutherford was waiting for never came.
Somehow, the guy who threw all those passes to Larry Fitzgerald and challenged Dan Marino's passing records at Pittsburgh wasn't selected in the NFL draft.
"I was getting calls promising this and that," Rutherford said. "After a while, nothing was happening and I was talking to my agent and he said, `Welcome to life in the NFL. People can look you in the face and lie to you.'"
Rutherford said teams called him several times and said they would take him with a certain pick. But that never came true.
"It was a humbling experience, but it's something that I'm going to remember and cherish for the rest of my life," Rutherford said.
That's right, Rutherford said he's going to cherish the draft snub. He signed as a free agent with the Carolina Panthers and is taking part in a three-day minicamp. Rutherford said he'll use the draft experience as motivation as he tries to make the team.
