PHILADELPHIA _ The most sought-after free agent in hockey this summer might not be a player but a broadcaster.
According to the Toronto Globe and Mail, the CBC will likely not renew the contract of longtime hockey icon Don Cherry.
That won't come as a shock to anyone who is familiar with "Grapes' " ranting, bashing, and taking politically incorrect stances on everything from referees to booing the national anthem to vague references about cowardly European players and even the war in Iraq.
After 23 years of Cherry as the centerpiece with his "Coach's Corner" segment for "Hockey Night in Canada, the CBC apparently wants a divorce.
"If they want me, they haven't approached me," Cherry told the paper. "And if the CBC doesn't want me, I've had a good ride."
Cherry and straight man Ron MacLean are like the Abbott and Costello of hockey. It's always entertaining and enlightening when they do a broadcast. The shame of it is, here in the United States, we can't see the show.
