PHILADELPHIA _ This Atlantic Division team lost its coach in midseason, then sputtered down the stretch in the race for the final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference, while critics claimed its top basketball official might have been in over his head.
No, it's not the 76ers. It's the Boston Celtics.
The Celtics lost five straight games in April and finished the season 36-46, but that was enough to beat out the Sixers and two other teams in the comedic stumbling that passed for late-season drama. Then they won as many playoff games _ none _ as the Sixers, getting swept by Indiana by an average margin of nearly 17 points.
Like the Sixers, the Celtics ended the season with an interim head coach. Shortly afterward, John Carroll saw all three words removed from his title in the same way as the Sixers' Chris Ford did.
By hiring Doc Rivers on Thursday to succeed Carroll, Danny Ainge, the Celtics' executive director of basketball operations, can concentrate on building a team for next season. But what that team is going to look like is anyone's guess.
