PHILADELPHIA _ In most cities, the baseball season is just beginning on the first of May.
In Detroit, at least in recent years, the season has been over by the first of May.
That's how adept at digging early holes the Tigers have been. They went 3-21 last April. They went 8-17 the April before. They went on to lose more than 100 games both seasons. Last year, the Tigers lost 119 games and had to win five of their last six to avoid joining the 1962 Mets as baseball's all-time punch line.
This April, things were different for the Tigers. They went 12-11. It was their first winning April since 1993.
Last year, they didn't win their 12th game until May 24.
"I can't tell you how different it is around here," Tigers outfielder Bobby Higginson said in a telephone interview Friday afternoon. "Until you've been through it, it's hard to describe what it's like going from losing 119 games to being 12-10 (entering Friday night) and having some hope."
