DALLAS _ Australian swimming star Ian Thorpe slipped from the starting block into the pool during his nation's recent Olympic Trials.
The false start was a genuine shame, as it cost Thorpe, 21, a chance to defend his 400-meter freestyle Olympic title. According to the rules, the glitch disqualified Thorpe from that race in the trials, eliminating him from that event in this August's Athens Olympics.
But on Monday, the swimmer who honestly earned that Olympic berth announced he was relinquishing it to allow Thorpe to defend his title. Craig Stevens' announcement came after weeks of controversy Down Under, where swimming is mighty serious stuff.
Yes, Thorpe's false start at the trials was unfortunate. The event wasn't a dress rehearsal, however, or billed as such. ...
