SEATTLE _ Since he became Microsoft's general counsel in 2001, Bradford Smith has steered the world's biggest software maker toward settlements with many of its legal foes. He still faces a major challenge in fighting the European Commission's recent antitrust sanctions. Smith spoke recently with Mercury News Seattle Bureau Chief Kristi Heim.
Q: What is the benefit of reaching all these settlements?
A: We've been very focused on strengthening our relationships with government and improving our relationships with the rest of the industry. The settlements have helped us do both of these things.
