WASHINGTON _ Since the inception of the World War II Memorial project, its creators have been acutely aware of two realities: the passing of time and the progression of age.

The war ended nearly 60 years ago, in 1945. And of the 16 million Americans who served in it, only 4 million are believed to be alive, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

As the remaining veterans edged into their 80s, organizers strived to complete the memorial in time for the soldiers to see their tribute. On Thursday, visitors walked across the memorial for the first time after the construction fences came down.

The main influx of visitors _ an estimated 800,000 people _ isn't expected until Memorial Day weekend, when the site is dedicated. While big bands take the stage to salute the heyday of the Greatest Generation, the city's tourism industry will focus on catering to visitors in their golden years.
