Apr. 24--George Dooley, president and chief executive of WPBT-PBS 2, announced Friday that he plans to retire next month after a 49-year career building South Florida's public television station from its inception.

"George made Channel 2 what it is today," said John Felton, the station's former vice president of programming and production, who retired in 1995.

"Besides the members, the viewers, the board of directors, the one person who has been the key to the station's success is George Dooley."
