Women who are obese at age 18 have up to a 7.3-fold increased risk of severe hip osteoarthritis later in life compared with leaner women, Dr. Elizabeth Karlson said at the annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology in Philadelphia.

Given the epidemic of obesity among children, there is likely to be an epidemic of hip osteoarthritis in 30 years, she said.

Dr. Karlson studied 567 women with confirmed, severe osteoarthritis of the hip that was not secondary to other disorders from the Nurses' Health Study. Women with a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or more at age 18 had a 7.3-fold ...
