ORLANDO, FLA. -- Laparoscopymay take longer to perform, but it is more cost effective than open surgery for pefforming hysterectomy and retropubic suspension, Dr. Gerard Pregenzer reported at the annual meeting of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists.
In a study comparing laparoscopy to laparotomy in 50 patients undergoing hysterectomy by either procedure, the total cost of laparoscopy averaged $4,070.93, compared with $5,719.40 for laparotomy. These figures represent all costs of services and materials from the time the patient entered the hospital until discharge.
