SAN DIEGO -- Operative laparoscopy can be an alternative to laparotomy for managing high obstetric vesicovaginal fistula, Dr. Ceana Nezhat reported in a poster session at the annual meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.
Obstetric vesicovaginal fistula is a rare occurrence in the United States, especially after cesarean section, said Dr. Nezhat of Stanford (Calif.) University. When it occurs, the location is usually high in the vagina. If a transvaginal approach is not appropriate, a transabdominal repair is indicated.
Dr. Nezhat described a case of laparoscopic management of a high obstetric vesicovaginal fistula. The 34-year-old woman presented with a vesicovaginal fistula, which occurred after emergency cesarean section at 42 weeks' gestation due to fetal distress and failure to descend.
