WASHINGTON -- Estrogen replacement therapy appears to improve endothelial dysfunction in postmenopausal women with hypertension, Dr. Yukhito Higashi said at the annual conference of the American Heart Association's Council for High Blood Pressure Research.
In a study of 50 postmenopausal women, forearm plethysmography was used to assess the vasodilatory response to two provocations. Forearm blood flow was measured during reactive hyperemia and reflected endothelium-dependent vasodilation. Blood flow was measured after administration of sublingual nitroglycerin and reflected vasodilation that was not related to the endothelium.
