If Sam Phillips' only claim was that he discovered Elvis Presley, it would be enough to celebrate his life with great fanfare and mourn his death Wednesday at age 80.

But it isn't his only claim.

As a record producer, Phillips helped launch the careers of several key African-American singers and players who had a profound influence on American music: blues belter Howlin' Wolf and guitarist B.B. King, rhythm `n' blues genius Ike Turner and original soul man Rufus Thomas.

If that's where Phillips' fingerprints on great American music vanished, it would be more than enough reason to sing his praises.
