Sam Phillips had a good ear. He could pinpoint raw talent, the kind that's young and green but brimming with potential, and immediately feel its burgeoning power. And he had the gumption to put his money where his ear was. The founder of Memphis' Sun Records Co. signed a handful of no-names to his little label in the mid-1950s.
And he inadvertently helped launch rock `n' roll. Those no-names he gambled on became superstars: Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty, Roy Orbison, Charlie Rich, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis.
