PHILADELPHIA _ John Allen, chief operating officer for the Cincinnati Reds, fired the manager and general manager on Monday.
Hey, no problem. The team had been losing. Neither move was unexpected.
Then he stood behind a podium and looked directly into the eyes of Reds fans through the battery of television cameras and said: "This doesn't means we're throwing in the towel on the season."
No problem, even though only the dizziest optimist would have suggested that Cincinnati will be doing anything other than playing out the string for the rest of the season.
But then, reportedly, Allen told his remaining baseball people to try to slash $20 million from the payroll. Or, as one assistant GM put it Wednesday when asked to assess the state of the trade market, "The Cincinnati superstore is open and everyone is shopping there right now."
And before Thursday's trading deadline arrived, outfielder Jose Guillen went to the Athletics, reliever Scott Williamson went to the Red Sox, Gabe White and Aaron Boone went to the Yankees.
