Five battle-proven (and simple) exercises for shaping your tummy (according to Dr. Shirley Sarmon, professor of physical therapy at Washington University):

1. Suck in your gut: Sounds simple enough. It can be done just about anywhere, too. Concentrate on pulling your navel into your spine with slow, controlled movements. The motion contracts and tightens the transverse abdominus, the key muscle giving people a small waist because it wraps around the whole of the abdominal wall.
