NEW ORLEANS _ They say every dog has his day. If Mark Menendez has two more days like he did Friday, then he'll win the Citgo Bassmasters Classic.
Menendez, who was fishing with his 4-year-old yellow Labrador retriever, Barkley, in his boat, caught a five-fish limit weighing 16 pounds, 10 ounces to take the opening-day lead in the 33rd annual Classic on the Louisiana Delta.
Michael Iaconelli of Woodbury Heights, N.J., was second at 15-6. Veteran Gary Klein of Weatherford, Texas, who is fishing in his 21st Classic, was third at 13-15, followed by Tim Horton of Muscle Shoals, Ala., at 12-4 and Harold Allen of Shelbyville, Texas at 11-10.
The 61-angler field will be cut to the top 25 after Saturday. The winner after Sunday's weigh-in at the New Orleans Area takes homes $200,000.
Menendez, 38, of Paducah, Ky., got off to a blazing start, catching a 6-pound, 2-ounce largemouth bass _ the biggest of the day _ on his fifth cast at his top spot.
"I just went there to get the monkey off my back and get started," said Menendez, who is fishing in his third Classic and was flipping a Yum Mega Tube. "After (a fish like) that, you can relax and focus for the rest of the day."
