Aug. 1--The national disaster relief fund for the American Red Cross is virtually depleted, leaving the agency with very little money to rush assistance to victims of earth...uakes, fires, tornadoes and floods.
The agency had $1.2 million on hand at the end of June, well below the $56 million it aims to have on reserve at all times for disasters. Officials believe the relief fund could now be close to zero.
