Only five states -- Connecticut, Maryland, Minnesota, Vermont and Virginia -- have enacted comprehensive substance abuse parity laws. A coalition of substance abuse and mental health advocates is trying to make New York the sixth.

Fair Insurance Today (FIT) is a coalition of about a dozen organizations, including the Association for Addiction Professionals in New York State; the New York State Association of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Providers Inc.; the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of New York State; the New York State Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare; and the New York State Psychiatric Association.
