WASHINGTON, DC -- Christie Whitman resigned May 21 as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) after a two-and-a-half-year term during which she was frequently at odds with the White House on environmental issues.

Whitman, a former two-term governor of New Jersey, was not forced out, administration officials insisted. She cited personal reasons for her resignation.
