In recent years, numerous healthful components have been identified in certain natural foods, and then the components--called nutraceuticals--have been isolated and added to processed food products. These include components as simple as vitamin D, which is added to fortified milk, to more exotic fare such as ginkgo biloba, which has been added to coffee. The newly fortified food, which isn't necessarily healthful in any other way, is then marketed as a "functional food."
