JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. _ The doors to the Capitol's main entrance swung open, and the state employee walking through them showed her identification card as she approached the uniformed security guard.
She smiled.
"Thank you, ma'am," said the guard, George Lister.
It had become part of the culture in Jefferson City since Sept. 11, 2001: The presence of metal detectors and uniformed security guards like Lister at entrances to the Capitol.
But now the guards and metal detectors will be gone. State budget woes prompted lawmakers this year to cut $564,000 from the budget that allowed for the guards to staff metal detectors at the Capitol and at two other buildings open to the public.
