Feeling the tension after this week's controversial affirmative-action ruling? "Dark Blue" (MGM, R) won't offer much relief, but there's hard-hitting dramatic catharsis.

No heroes, either. But Kurt Russell impresses as the complex protagonist in James Ellroy's story. It plays out like a modern variation on Ellroy's "L.A. Confidential" amid the city's Rodney King riots. After the dirty-but-effective veteran cop (Russell) initiates a young partner, the ambitious deputy chief he calls "affirmatron" (Ving Rhames) vows to bring him down along with his scheming boss (Brendan Gleeson).

As the city reaches the flash point, the boss sends the partners on a sham investigation; but Russell has enough shreds of honor and guts left to go where the truth leads. Only a ...
