PANJABI MC "Beware" (Sequence) 3 stars

Jamaican dancehall has broken through in a big way to the American mainstream and now Indian bhangra is threatening to do the same. The funky updating of the music of India's Punjabi region, already a hit in European clubs, has gotten major exposure in the film "Bend it Like Beckham" and with rapper Jay-Z's hit collaboration with England's Panjabi MC, "Beware of the Boys."

But, judging from his debut American album" Beware" (in stores Tuesday), Panjabi MC (real name: Rajinder Rai) doesn't deserve to be a one-hit wonder. His seamless blending of bhangra with reggae, hip-hop and R&B makes a persuasive case for rhythmic globalization.
