If the composer-pianist-bandleader Carla Bley didn't exist, as the saying goes, nobody could invent her, but many of us would still quit our jobs just to try. The world would be a lot less entertaining without the loopy humor, restless curiosity, uninhibited imagination, charisma and disarming wisdom of her best music.
Bley has recorded with all kinds of ensembles and concepts during her 40-year career, but it's a special treat whenever she returns to a traditional (more-or-less) big band, where the broad canvas holds her weightiest ideas without mortgaging the delicate balance of discipline and freedom that keeps listeners _ and her musicians _ on their toes.
