FORT WORTH, Texas _ Would he have to sell his PlayStation, Alex Abernathy wondered. And could he stay at the same school?
The 9-year-old's parents, Bill and Ellen Abernathy of Colleyville, Texas, are American Airlines flight attendants. Both took pay cuts last month so American could avoid bankruptcy, and now everyone's learning to live with less.
Clothes come from the discount stores these days. Dinner is always eaten at home. And celebrations are being scaled down, including Alex's 10th birthday next month.
"I told him, `You know what? We're going to go to the park, and we're going to have cheese pizza, and I'm going to bake you a birthday cake,' " Ellen Abernathy said.
Alex looked at her, a little confused.
"He's always gone to the bakery and picked out the biggest chocolate cake," his mother said. "I sure hope it turns out OK _ I haven't baked in a while."
