I have two cousins, one on each side of the family, who spend considerable time and attention on their respective family trees.
Thanks to their efforts, I know where I've been _ genealogically speaking, that is _ since about the year 1400. Which is not bad for some Germans and some Irish who were far from being landed gentry.
But the real kick is knowing the family's oral history, from my great-grandfather who stole a horse and sold it to pay for his passage to America to a grandmother who worked as a house cleaner at age 12 and never stopped doing dishes until the day she died at 73.
