DEADLY HEAT

Leaving a child unattended in a vehicle can lead to deadly consequences, especially in the summer heat.

Since 1996 at least 175 children have died of heat stroke after being trapped inside a parked car. Most were strapped in child safety seats and left behind or forgotten by an adult, while others gained access to an unlocked car and could not escape. The National Safe Kids Campaign and General Motors is conducting a national campaign aimed at educating parents and caregivers about the dangers of leaving children unattended in cars. To download a brochure in English or Spanish, visit www.safekids.org.

And don't forget this often overlooked task: Always check the temperature of child safety seats and seat belt buckles before restraining your child. The metal parts of buckles can get extremely hot and cause serious burns.

BUT WHAT DOES IT DO?

It is estimated that 60 percent of preschool toys have some sort of computer chip in them, from walkers that play the piano to teddy bears with voice mail.
