Byline: Debra-Lynn B. Hook
A couple of years ago, a young writer and environmental activist moved in to the white clapboard house kitty-corner to our back yard, along with her husband and daughter.
Diane and I introduced ourselves, and soon enough, we were getting our kids together, borrowing eggs and cups of sugar and otherwise acting like neighbor women do.
But it wasn't until several months later that our friendship really took off.
That's when she put in the back fence.
The back fence is mythical. Certainly, the white picket fence, alone _ which her fence happens to be _ suggests Mom and apple pie, or "Huckleberry Finn."
