The number of adults who choose to donate a large portion of their liver to help save a sick loved one is on the rise.

In 1997, only one adult received a liver transplant from a living donor. By 2000, that number had jumped to 266 adults, according to a study published in a recent issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.

The procedure was introduced in 1989 to increase the number of suitable liver transplants for children. In an adult-to-child transplant, about 20 percent of the adult's liver is removed and transplanted. The liver then regenerates in the donor and recipient.
