It seemed like a fairly easy task _ picking 100 great Westerns from a century of Hollywood cattle drives, shoot-outs and barroom brawls.
Well, pilgrim, it wasn't, but it sure was fun.
While screening dozens of Westerns during the past several weeks, I sat down and re-worked the list so many times I was getting saddle sore.
I had at least five different films ranked No. 1 at one time or another. And there were at least 20 titles included on my initial list that I dropped by the time the final draft was complete.
There are several films on the list that I don't particularly care for, but I thought they deserved to be there. But then, others are on the list because they are personal favorites.
For a film to make the list, it had to capture the unconquerable spirit of what is America's version of Greek mythology; have an impact on the Western film genre; break new ground; and have historical importance. Or just be one darn fine piece of moviemaking.
