ST. PAUL, Minn. _ Democratic presidential candidates John Kerry of Massachusetts and Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut said Friday they would block any Supreme Court nominee who did not vow to uphold the 1973 decision that legalized abortion nationwide.

The U.S. senators made their pledges in separate speeches to Democratic Party leaders at a weekend meeting here. As the end of the current Supreme Court term approaches, and speculation grows about a possible retirement among the justices, Democrats fear the Bush administration will nominate a conservative judge who could tip the balance and overturn the landmark Roe vs. Wade ruling.
