A substance once considered inconsequential has now been established as the first new vitamin discovered Since 1948.
Studies in mice show that the micronutrient pyrroloquinoline quinone (PPQ)--once viewed as a nonessential antioxidant--affects immune response, reproduction, skin health-and amino acid breakdown. Generally, vitamins have similar effects in humans and mice.
PPQ was first discovered in 1979, although it wasn't immediately recognized as a vitamin. In 1995, a study in Nutrition Review, for instance, discussed PPQ's usefulness as an antioxidant in fighting cellular damage, but the study did not recognize PPQ's nutritive value.
The new study, however, has firmly established PPQ as the first new vitamin to be identified by scientists in 55 years.
